SACMI Integrates AI into Computer Vision Systems for Closure and Preform Inspection

Italian equipment manufacturer SACMI has introduced new artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities for its Computer Vision Systems (CVS), expanding the use of AI in quality inspection for rigid packaging production.

According to the company, AI has become an increasingly important component of manufacturing competitiveness, prompting SACMI to integrate the technology more deeply into its Computer Vision Systems (CVS). Rather than relying solely on commercial AI algorithm libraries to identify defects, SACMI said it has developed new software architectures that combine artificial intelligence with conventional machine vision technologies.

The latest developments centre on two AI-powered applications within SACMI's CVS platform: Classy-AI and Gilda-AI.

Classy-AI uses deep learning to automatically classify different types of production defects. The company said the software enables manufacturers to recognise defects automatically, allowing process drifts to be identified and corrected more quickly, while helping manufacturers optimise production workflows.

Gilda-AI, meanwhile, is designed to function as a digital assistant, providing real-time recommendations, suggesting corrective actions and supporting continuous production process improvement.

SACMI said the integration of AI into its CVS platform reflects a broader research and development strategy rather than the adoption of a standalone production technology. According to the company, combining AI with established machine vision technologies is intended to strengthen quality inspection while providing greater support for production operators.

The company said the latest developments form part of its ongoing efforts to improve product quality, production efficiency and manufacturing sustainability through AI-enabled inspection systems.
